Finishing quantities use the standard estimating ratios: 1 screw per ft² (16" on-centre framing, screws every 12" up the stud) at about 320 screws to the pound; one 4.5-gallon box of all-purpose compound per 475 ft² for a three-coat finish; and 0.4 linear feet of tape per ft². Openings are deducted at 21 ft² per door and 15 ft² per window. Consumables are figured on the waste-adjusted area, because you tape and mud the sheets you actually hang, offcuts included. Not included: corner bead, furring, adhesive, or the extra compound a level-5 finish needs. Buy the sheets in the longest length you can carry and get into the room — fewer butt joints is less taping, and horizontal 12-footers on an 8 ft wall leave just one seam to finish.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose room size to have the wall area worked out from the dimensions, or wall area if you have already measured it.
  2. Enter length, width, and ceiling height, and decide whether you are boarding the ceiling as well. The ceiling adds a lot — often a third of the total.
  3. Count the doors and windows to deduct. Standard sizes are assumed; adjust the counts if yours are unusually large.
  4. Pick your sheet size. Longer sheets mean fewer sheets and far fewer butt joints — compare 4x8 against 4x12 and look at what happens to the sheet count.
  5. Set the waste factor and, optionally, a price per sheet.

The formula

Wall area = 2 × (Length + Width) × Height  ·  Board area = Wall area − Openings + Ceiling  ·  Sheets = (Board area × Waste) ÷ Sheet area

Worked example — a 12 × 14 ft room with the ceiling

8 ft ceilings, one door, two windows, 4 × 8 sheets, 10% waste.

  • Wall area: 2 × (12 + 14) × 8 = 416 ft²
  • Openings: 21 + (2 × 15) = 51 ft²
  • Ceiling: 12 × 14 = 168 ft²
  • Board area: 416 − 51 + 168 = 533 ft²
  • With 10% waste: 533 × 1.10 = 586 ft²
  • Sheets: 586 ÷ 32 = 18.3 → 19 sheets
  • Screws: 587 ≈ 1.8 lb
  • Compound: 586 ÷ 475 = 1.23 → 2 boxes (≈ 5.6 gallons)
  • Tape: 586 × 0.4 = 235 ft → 1 roll

Switch the sheet size to 4 × 12 and the same room takes 13 sheets instead of 19. The consumables do not change — you are covering the same area — but you will have dramatically fewer butt joints to tape, which is where most of the labour and nearly all of the skill lives.

Sheet size matters more than sheet count

The instinct is to buy 4 × 8 sheets because they are the easiest to carry. For an 8-foot wall, that is usually the wrong call. A 4 × 8 hung vertically gives you a butt joint every four feet; a 4 × 12 hung horizontally gives you one long tapered seam at mid-wall and no butt joints at all on a 12-foot wall.

That distinction matters because tapered seams and butt joints are not the same job. The long edges of a drywall sheet are factory-tapered, so tape and compound sit in a recess and finish flat. Butt joints — where two cut ends meet — have no recess, so the tape sits proud and has to be feathered out 10 to 12 inches on each side to hide it. Fewer butt joints is less compound, less sanding, and a better-looking wall.

The practical limit is not the price, it is whether you can get the sheet into the room. A 4 × 12 sheet weighs around 80 lb in ½-inch board and does not turn a tight staircase corner. Measure your access before ordering.

The materials people forget

Sheets are the obvious purchase and roughly half the cost. The finishing materials are what send people back to the store mid-job:

  • Screws — 1¼-inch coarse thread for wood framing, fine thread for steel studs. One per square foot is the working rule; ceilings want tighter spacing than walls.
  • Joint compound — all-purpose in a 4.5-gallon box covers about 475 ft² over three coats. Buy one box more than you calculate; leftover compound keeps, and running out between coats stalls the job for a day.
  • Tape — paper for flat seams and inside corners, which is stronger and less crack-prone than mesh.
  • Corner bead — not estimated here, because it depends on how many outside corners you have. Count them and measure the height.
  • Sanding supplies and dust control. Drywall dust gets into everything. A pole sander, a sanding sponge for corners, and plastic sheeting over doorways are not optional.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Forgetting the ceiling. In a typical room it is roughly a third of the total board area. It is also the hardest part to hang alone — budget for a panel lift or a second person.
  • Deducting openings and skipping the waste factor. You still cut around openings, and much of that material becomes offcut. Do both, as this calculator does, or neither.
  • Buying exactly the sheet count. One damaged corner on the way home and you are short. The waste factor covers cuts, not accidents.
  • Using the wrong board. Moisture-resistant board in bathrooms, cement board behind tile in wet areas, and Type X fire-rated board where code requires it — a garage ceiling under living space, for instance.
  • Under-buying compound. It is cheap, it stores, and running out between coats costs a day.

How we calculate this

Wall area is 2 × (length + width) × ceiling height, plus length × width when the ceiling is boarded. Openings are deducted at 21 ft² per door and 15 ft² per window. The waste factor is applied to that area, and the sheet count is the waste-adjusted area divided by the sheet area, rounded up. How many sheets of drywall do I need for a 12x14 room?

A 12 by 14 foot room with 8-foot ceilings has 416 square feet of wall. Deduct a door and two windows and add the 168 square foot ceiling and you are covering 533 square feet. With 10% waste that is 586 square feet, which is 19 sheets of 4x8 drywall — or 13 sheets if you use 4x12s.

How many square feet is a sheet of drywall?

A standard 4 by 8 foot sheet is 32 square feet. A 4x9 is 36, a 4x10 is 40, and a 4x12 is 48. Longer sheets cost more each but cover more per sheet and — more importantly — leave far fewer butt joints to tape, which is the slowest and most skill-dependent part of the job.

How much joint compound do I need?

About one 4.5-gallon box per 475 square feet of drywall for a standard three-coat finish. A 500 square foot room therefore needs roughly one and a bit boxes, so buy two. A level-5 finish, which adds a skim coat over the whole surface, needs substantially more — budget around 50% extra.

How many drywall screws do I need?

Roughly one screw per square foot of board, which assumes framing 16 inches on centre with screws every 12 inches up each stud. A 500 square foot room needs about 500 screws, and 1¼-inch coarse-thread screws run about 320 to the pound, so that is a pound and a half — buy a 1 lb or 5 lb box accordingly. Ceilings need closer spacing than walls, so round up if you are boarding overhead.

How much drywall tape do I need?

About 0.4 linear feet of tape per square foot of drywall, so a 500 square foot room takes roughly 200 feet. Standard rolls are 250 or 500 feet, so most single rooms need one roll. Buy paper tape for flat seams and inside corners — it is stronger than mesh and less prone to cracking — and mesh only if you specifically want it for patches.

Should I hang drywall horizontally or vertically?

Horizontally, in most residential work. Hanging 4x12 sheets horizontally on an 8-foot wall gives you one long seam at mid-height instead of a vertical butt joint every four feet, and the horizontal seam falls at a comfortable height to tape. Vertical hanging makes sense for walls taller than the sheet length and in commercial work where fire ratings specify it.

What waste factor should I use for drywall?

10% for a straightforward rectangular room. 15% for rooms with a lot of angles, closets, soffits, or short walls, where the offcuts are too small to reuse. Unlike some materials, drywall offcuts are genuinely usable — a piece cut from a doorway opening often fills the space above it — so a careful hanger in a simple room can beat 10%.

Do I deduct doors and windows from a drywall estimate?

Yes, but understand what the deduction represents. You still cut the board around openings, so some of that material is offcut rather than saved. Deducting the openings and then adding a 10% waste factor gets you to about the right place — that is exactly what this calculator does. Do not deduct openings and then also skip the waste factor.
