A roofing square is 100 ft² of roof surface — the unit shingles are sold and quoted in, including outside the US. The pitch multiplier is √(rise² + 12²) ÷ 12, so a 6/12 roof is 11.8% larger than the footprint under it. This estimates field area only: add ridge cap, starter strip, valley and drip edge separately, and measure hips, valleys and dormers on a cut-up roof rather than trusting a footprint. Price covers shingles alone — not underlayment, nails, tear-off, disposal, or labour.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose whether you are measuring the ground footprint (the outline of the building, which you can measure from the ground) or the roof surface itself (if you have already measured on the slope). Footprint is the usual starting point.
  2. Enter the dimensions, including any overhang — the roof extends past the walls, and that material still has to be bought.
  3. Pick the roof pitch. The dropdown shows the multiplier each pitch applies and flags which ones are walkable.
  4. Set the waste factor: 10% for a simple gable, 15% for anything with hips, valleys, or dormers.
  5. Adjust bundles per square if your shingles differ from the standard 3, choose your underlayment, and add a price per square for a material cost.

The formula

Pitch multiplier = √(rise² + 12²) ÷ 12  ·  Roof area = Footprint × Pitch multiplier  ·  Squares = Roof area ÷ 100

Order area = Roof area × (1 + waste ÷ 100)  ·  Bundles = Order area ÷ (100 ÷ bundles per square)

Worked example — a 40 × 30 ft house at 6/12

A simple gable roof over a 40 ft × 30 ft footprint at a 6/12 pitch, standard architectural shingles at 3 bundles per square, 10% waste, 15 lb felt.

  • Footprint: 40 × 30 = 1,200 ft²
  • Pitch multiplier: √(6² + 12²) ÷ 12 = √180 ÷ 12 = 1.1180
  • Roof surface: 1,200 × 1.1180 = 1,341.6 ft²
  • With 10% waste: 1,341.6 × 1.10 = 1,475.8 ft²
  • Squares: 1,475.8 ÷ 100 = 14.76 → order 15 squares
  • Bundles: 45 bundles at 3 per square
  • Underlayment: 15 ÷ 4 = 3.75 → 4 rolls of 15 lb felt

At $120 per square for mid-range architectural shingles, that is about $1,800 in field shingles — before underlayment, nails, ridge cap, starter strip, drip edge, tear-off, disposal, or labour. Materials are usually a third to a half of a finished re-roof quote.

Roof pitch reference

Pitch is stated as rise over a 12-inch run. It drives three things at once: how much material the roof needs, whether it can be walked, and whether shingles are even an approved covering.

Notice how much the multiplier moves. The same house needs 5% more material at 4/12 and 41% more at 12/12. Guessing the pitch is the fastest way to an order that is badly wrong, and it is the number most people skip.

How to measure your pitch safely

You do not need to get on the roof. Take a 2-foot level and a tape measure into the attic, hold the level horizontally against the underside of a rafter, mark 12 inches along it, and measure straight down from that mark to the rafter. That drop in inches is your rise. A 6-inch drop is 6/12.

From outside, you can do the same against a gable end at ladder height. What you should not do is climb onto an unknown roof with a level — the pitch you are trying to measure is exactly what determines whether that is safe.

Why waste is higher on a complicated roof

On a simple gable, shingles run in straight courses and the only offcuts are at the rakes. Almost nothing is thrown away, and 10% covers it comfortably.

Every valley, hip, and dormer changes that. Shingles meeting a valley have to be cut at an angle, and the offcut is usually too small to use anywhere else. A roof with four or five planes can genuinely lose 15% of the material to cuts. Running short mid-job is worse than on most materials, because shingle colour varies between production lots — a top-up bundle from a different lot can be visibly different on the finished roof.

What this calculator does not include

  • Ridge cap and starter strip. Sold by the linear foot, driven by ridge, hip, and eave lengths a footprint cannot tell you. Measure and add separately.
  • Valley and drip edge material, ice-and-water shield at eaves, and flashing around penetrations.
  • Nails. Budget roughly 2 lb of roofing nails per square for a standard four-nail pattern, more in a high-wind zone that requires six.
  • Tear-off and disposal. An existing layer of shingles is roughly 250 lb per square to remove and haul away, and dumpster costs are a real line item.
  • Labour and permits, which are usually the larger half of a re-roof quote.

Roofing is high-consequence work. Pitches over 6/12, two-storey roofs, and anything requiring staging are genuinely dangerous — this calculator estimates materials, not whether the job is a safe DIY project.

How we calculate this

Roof surface = footprint area × pitch multiplier, where the multiplier is √(rise² + 12²) ÷ 12 — the hypotenuse of a right triangle with a 12-inch run and the stated rise. A 6/12 pitch gives 1.1180, so the sloped surface is 11.8% larger than the footprint. The waste factor is applied to the area, so it flows through to squares, bundles, and underlayment consistently rather than reaching only the bundle count. Squares are 100 ft² each and round up, since that is how shingles price out. Bundle counts derive from the waste-adjusted area at your stated bundles-per-square rather than from the rounded square count, so a small job does not get an extra bundle it will never open. Underlayment rolls come from the square total at 4 squares per roll for 15 lb felt, 2 for 30 lb, and 10 for synthetic.

How many bundles of shingles do I need for a 1,500 square foot roof?

A 1,500 square foot roof surface is 15 roofing squares. At the usual 3 bundles per square that is 45 bundles before waste, or about 50 bundles once you add the standard 10% allowance. Note that 1,500 square feet of roof surface is not the same as a 1,500 square foot house — a 6/12 pitch makes the roof about 12% larger than the footprint beneath it.

What is a roofing square?

A square is 100 square feet of roof surface. It is the unit shingles are sold, quoted, and estimated in throughout the trade, including in countries that otherwise use metric. Most architectural and 3-tab shingles come 3 bundles to the square, so one square is three bundles off the pallet.

How do I calculate roof area from the footprint?

Multiply the ground footprint by the pitch multiplier, which is the square root of (rise² + 12²) divided by 12. A 6/12 pitch gives 1.118, so a 1,200 square foot footprint carries 1,342 square feet of roof. The multiplier only accounts for slope — it does not account for overhangs, dormers, or the extra material a cut-up roof wastes.

How do I measure roof pitch?

Hold a level horizontally against the roof surface, mark 12 inches along it, and measure straight down from that mark to the roof. That vertical distance is the rise per 12 inches of run, so a 6-inch drop is a 6/12 pitch. What waste factor should I use for roofing?

10% for a simple gable roof with straight runs. 15% for a roof with hips, valleys, dormers, or several roof planes, because every valley and hip means cutting shingles at an angle and throwing the offcut away. Some estimators go to 18% on a genuinely complex roof. Waste on a roof is not optional padding — the cuts genuinely consume that material.

How much underlayment do I need?

It depends on the product. A roll of 15 lb felt covers about 4 squares, 30 lb felt about 2 squares, and synthetic underlayment about 10 squares per roll. Because the coverage differs so much, always check the roll rather than assuming — this calculator lets you pick the type and works out the roll count from your square total.

Can I shingle a low-slope roof?

Standard asphalt shingles need a minimum 2/12 pitch, and manufacturers require a double layer of underlayment or a self-adhering ice-and-water membrane between 2/12 and 4/12. Below 2/12, shingles are not an approved application at all — wind-driven rain gets under them — and you need a membrane roof such as TPO, EPDM, or modified bitumen instead.

Does this calculator include ridge cap and starter strip?

No. It estimates field shingles, which is the bulk of the order. Ridge cap and starter strip are sold by the linear foot and depend on your ridge, hip, and eave lengths, which a footprint cannot tell you. Measure those separately and add them — on a simple gable roof they are a small fraction of the total, but on a hip roof the ridge and hip runs add up quickly.
