Check these figures against the sticker in your driver's door jamb and your owner's manual. Every vehicle's ratings differ by trim, engine, axle ratio, cab configuration, and equipment — the tow rating in an advertisement is for the lightest configuration of the model and is very often not your vehicle. The door jamb sticker gives your specific GVWR and, on most vehicles, a payload figure for the exact truck as built. Nothing here overrides those numbers.

The limit people hit first is payload, not tow rating. Tongue weight presses down on the tow vehicle's rear axle and counts against payload alongside passengers and cargo, so a truck advertised to tow 12,000 lb often runs out of payload with a 9,000 lb trailer and a family aboard. Tongue weight itself should be 10–15% of trailer weight for a conventional hitch and 15–25% for a fifth wheel — too little is the classic cause of trailer sway, which is violent and difficult to recover from. Also confirm the hitch and ball rating, which is a separate limit again, and consider a weight-distributing hitch on heavier trailers. This is a planning tool, not a substitute for weighing the actual combination at a scale.

Worked example — a half-ton truck that fails on payload

GVWR 7,000 lb, GCWR 16,000 lb, curb weight 5,500 lb, towing a 7,000 lb trailer at 12% tongue weight, with 500 lb of people and 200 lb of cargo.

  • Payload capacity: 7,000 − 5,500 = 1,500 lb
  • Tongue weight: 12% of 7,000 = 840 lb
  • Payload used: 500 + 200 + 840 = 1,540 lb
  • Payload remaining: −40 lb — over the limit
  • Loaded vehicle: 7,040 lb against a 7,000 lb GVWR — over GVWR
  • Combined weight: 14,040 lb against a 16,000 lb GCWR — within GCWR

This is the trap. The combination is nearly 2,000 lb under its combined rating and would look entirely fine to anyone checking only the tow rating — yet the truck itself is over its GVWR because tongue weight, passengers, and cargo together exceeded a modest payload. Checking GCWR alone would have missed it.

Payload is the limit you hit first

Manufacturers advertise tow ratings because they are impressive. Payload is the number that actually constrains most real trips, and it is printed in much smaller type.

The reason is arithmetic. A truck rated to tow 12,000 lb might have 1,500 lb of payload. A 12,000 lb trailer at 12% tongue weight puts 1,440 lb on the hitch — leaving 60 lb for the driver, passengers, fuel in the bed-mounted tank, the hitch itself, and anything else. The advertised tow rating quietly assumes a nearly empty truck with one driver and nothing else aboard.

Everything that presses down on the vehicle counts against payload: people, cargo, aftermarket accessories, a bed cover, toolboxes, the weight-distributing hitch hardware, and tongue weight. Add them all before assuming a trailer is within reach.

Tongue weight and trailer sway

Tongue weight is not just a payload problem — it is a stability one, and getting it wrong is genuinely dangerous.

Too little tongue weight is the more dangerous failure. A trailer loaded tail-heavy will begin to oscillate at speed, and each swing feeds the next — the standard advice is to ease off the throttle and apply the trailer brakes only, never the vehicle brakes, but the real fix is loading roughly 60% of the trailer's cargo ahead of its axle so the tongue weight lands in range.

The other limits to check

  • Rear axle rating (RGAWR). Tongue weight lands almost entirely on the rear axle and can exceed its individual rating even when GVWR is fine.
  • Hitch and ball rating. A separate limit again, stamped on the hitch and the ball, and the lowest-rated component governs.
  • Trailer brake requirements, which apply above a stated trailer weight in most jurisdictions.
  • Tyre load ratings on the tow vehicle, which must support the loaded axle weights.
  • Weight-distributing hitch requirements, often mandated by the manufacturer above about 5,000 lb of trailer.

Weigh it, do not estimate it

This calculator is a planning tool. Trailer weights are routinely underestimated — the dry weight on a brochure excludes water, propane, batteries, and everything you pack, which on a travel trailer can add 1,000 lb or more.

Take the loaded combination to a public scale and weigh it properly: the vehicle alone, the vehicle with the trailer connected, and the trailer alone. That gives you real axle weights and a real tongue weight, and it is the only way to know rather than assume.

Towing beyond a rating lengthens braking distances, degrades stability, stresses the drivetrain and brakes beyond their design, may void warranty coverage, and can affect insurance and liability in an incident. If the numbers here come out marginal, treat that as a no.

The maximum trailer figure is GCWR minus the loaded vehicle, so it reflects the vehicle as you have actually loaded it rather than an empty one. A combination passes only when it is inside both ratings and payload is not exceeded.
